Tecnu is a favorite solution for poison oak contact. This waterless cleanser decontaminates and cleanses the skin by removing the oils of poison oak, ivy and sumac. Developed in the 1960s by chemical engineer, Dr. Robert Smith, to remove radioactive dust from the skin, Mrs. Smith then discovered it was very effective on the oils of poison oak and poison ivy. Tecnu is readily available in bottle size packaging at most drug stores, but individual size packets, which are easy to carry in your pack, medical kit, or pocket, are hard to find. Most effective with application immediately after exposure, keep a packet or two with you when you go into the brush. Each packet contains .5 fluid oz.
